This recipe for the best ground beef taco meat is a quick and flavorful way to prepare a classic taco filling. Ground beef is cooked with onions, garlic, and a blend of traditional Mexican spices, then simmered in tomato sauce to create a rich and savory mixture. Perfect for taco night, this versatile filling pairs well with taco shells and a variety of toppings.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup chopped white or yellow onion
  • 1 to 3 garlic cloves, finely minced, or 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 jalapeño, seeded and finely minced (optional)

To Serve

  • Taco shells
  • Taco toppings of choice (cheese, lettuce, sour cream, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Cook the ground beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef, chopped onion, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook while stirring often and breaking the meat into small pieces until the beef is fully cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Drain excess grease: Remove the skillet from heat and drain any excess grease if necessary to reduce fat content.
  3. Add spices: Return the skillet to medium heat, then stir in the garlic (or garlic powder), chili powder, ground cumin, ground coriander, salt, and black pepper. Cook the mixture for about 30 seconds until fragrant, allowing the spices to toast briefly.
  4. Simmer with tomato sauce: Add the tomato sauce and the minced jalapeño if using. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally to meld the flavors. Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper as needed.
  5. Serve: Spoon the taco meat into taco shells and top with your preferred taco toppings such as shredded cheese, lettuce, sour cream, and salsa. This meat also works great in taco salads.

Notes

  • Ground turkey can be used as a leaner alternative to ground beef.
  • Adjust the amount of jalapeño to control the spice level.
  • To reduce fat, drain grease thoroughly after cooking the meat.
  • For a deeper flavor, allow the meat to simmer longer than 10 minutes if desired.
  • Customize toppings based on preference for a family-friendly or spicy taco experience.
