This Sour Cream and Onion Chicken recipe features tender, juicy chicken breasts cooked in a savory, creamy sauce made from sautéed onions, garlic, chicken broth, Worcestershire sauce, and rich sour cream. Finished with fresh parsley, this dish is perfect for a comforting and flavorful weeknight dinner prepared entirely on the stovetop within 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt & pepper (to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter (divided)

Sauce

  • 1 medium onion (sliced)
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup sour cream (full-fat)
  • Fresh chopped parsley (optional, to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the chicken: Cut the chicken breasts in half lengthwise so you have 4 thinner pieces. Sprinkle them evenly with garlic powder and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Heat the skillet: Place a skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil along with one tablespoon of butter. Allow the pan to heat for a few minutes until hot.
  3. Cook the chicken: Add the chicken pieces to the hot skillet. Cook for approximately 5-6 minutes on each side or until the chicken is golden brown and fully cooked through (internal temperature reaches 165°F). Transfer the cooked chicken to a plate and set aside.
  4. Sauté the onions: Reduce the heat to medium and add the remaining tablespoon of butter to the skillet. Add the sliced onions and cook them slowly, stirring occasionally, until they become softened and lightly browned, about 10 to 15 minutes. Adjust the heat as needed to avoid burning and ensure gradual caramelization.
  5. Add garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and continue cooking for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant.
  6. Deglaze the pan: Pour in the chicken broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up any browned bits stuck to the bottom of the skillet to incorporate rich flavors into the sauce.
  7. Create the creamy sauce: Stir in the sour cream until the sauce is smooth and creamy. Heat the sauce gently for a couple of minutes, making sure it does not boil to prevent curdling.
  8. Combine chicken and sauce: Return the cooked chicken pieces to the skillet and spoon the sauce over them. Taste and season with additional salt and pepper if needed.
  9. Finish and serve: Garnish with freshly chopped parsley if desired and serve immediately for a warm, comforting meal.

Notes

  • To ensure even cooking, slice the chicken breasts lengthwise into thinner pieces.
  • Do not let the sour cream sauce boil to prevent it from curdling; heat gently instead.
  • Adjust seasoning at the end to taste for best flavor balance.
  • Serve with rice, mashed potatoes, or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
  • Use full-fat sour cream for a richer, creamier sauce.
