A simple and flavorful sautéed cabbage recipe that’s perfect as a quick side dish. Tender green cabbage is cooked with onion, garlic, smoked paprika, and a buttery olive oil base for a savory and slightly smoky taste. Ready in just 30 minutes, this dish pairs well with a variety of mains.

Ingredients

Vegetables

  • 1 medium head green cabbage, cored and sliced into thin strips
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Oils & Fats

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil

Spices & Seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prep the vegetables: Slice the cabbage thinly after removing the core and chop the onion into small pieces.
  2. Sauté the onion: Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat, add the chopped onion and cook for 3 minutes until softened.
  3. Cook the cabbage: Add the sliced cabbage to the skillet. Toss or stir frequently using two spoons or tongs. Cook for about 10-15 minutes until the cabbage is tender and has reduced in volume.
  4. Add spices and garlic: Stir in the smoked paprika and minced garlic. Continue cooking for another 2 minutes, adjusting heat if needed to prevent excessive browning while allowing some caramelization for flavor.
  5. Season and serve: Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately as a warm side dish.

Notes

  • Using two spoons or tongs helps toss the cabbage without breaking it down too much.
  • The slight browning adds depth of flavor but avoid burning the garlic.
  • This dish can be customized with additional spices like cayenne or cumin for extra heat and complexity.
  • Leftovers keep well refrigerated and can be reheated gently on the stovetop.
