This Simple Cheese Ball recipe brings together creamy, sharp cheddar cheese blended with flavorful spices and green onions, rolled in crunchy pecans. Perfect for parties or casual gatherings, it’s an easy, no-cook appetizer served chilled and ready to dip with crackers, pretzels, or vegetables.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 16 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese (avoid pre-shredded cheese)
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Dash freshly ground black pepper
  • 2/3 cup pecans, finely chopped

Instructions

  1. Mix cheeseball ingredients: Place the softened cream cheese in a mixing bowl and beat until smooth. Add the sharp cheddar cheese, chopped green onions, Worcestershire sauce, hot pepper sauce, dried parsley flakes, garlic powder, dried oregano, and a dash of freshly ground black pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined.
  2. Form into ball: Using a rubber spatula, scrape down the sides of the bowl to gather the mixture into one lump. Lightly grease your hands with a little oil or water to prevent sticking, then shape the cheese mixture into a smooth, round ball.
  3. Coat with nuts: Spread the finely chopped pecans evenly on a plate. Hold the cheese ball in one hand and use your other hand to press the pecans gently onto the surface of the ball, rolling and turning it to ensure all sides are fully coated with nuts.
  4. Chill and serve: Wrap the nut-coated cheese ball tightly in cling wrap and refrigerate for about 1 hour to allow it to firm up and flavors to meld. Before serving, remove from the fridge about 20 minutes early to let it soften slightly for a perfect spreading texture. Serve with crackers, pretzels, fresh vegetables, or your preferred dippers.

Notes

  • Use freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese instead of pre-shredded for better texture and flavor.
  • To make shaping easier, lightly grease your hands or chill the mixture before forming the ball.
  • Adapt the hot pepper sauce quantity to your preferred spice level.
  • The cheese ball can be made a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
  • Try substituting pecans with walnuts or almonds if desired.
