This easy and healthy sautéed cabbage recipe is a quick side dish that transforms simple ingredients like cabbage, onion, and garlic into a flavorful, caramelized delight. Perfect for a nutritious meal addition, this dish is cooked on the stovetop using ghee for a rich taste and can be seasoned to your preference with kosher salt and ground black pepper.

Ingredients

Vegetables

  • 1 small green cabbage
  • 1 small yellow onion
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

Seasonings and Fats

  • 2 tablespoons ghee (or a blend of butter and olive oil)
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • Ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Slice the cabbage and onion: Cut the cabbage in half, then into quarters. Remove the core from each piece and chop crosswise into thin slices. Slice the onion in half and then crosswise into thin slices to prepare for cooking.
  2. Cook the onions: Heat the ghee in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté for about one minute or until they just start to soften. Then add the minced garlic and stir to combine, allowing the aroma to develop.
  3. Cook the cabbage: Add the sliced cabbage to the skillet with the onions and garlic. Sauté for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage softens and becomes caramelized, developing a golden-brown color and enhanced flavor.
  4. Season and serve: Before serving, season the sautéed cabbage with kosher salt and ground black pepper to taste. Toss everything together to evenly distribute the seasoning and serve warm as a side dish.

Notes

  • You can substitute ghee with butter or olive oil if desired for different flavor profiles.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of apple cider vinegar or a pinch of red pepper flakes during cooking.
  • Ensure to stir occasionally while sautéing to prevent burning and promote even caramelization.
  • This dish pairs well with roasted meats, grilled chicken, or can be enjoyed as a vegetarian side.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
