This Old Fashioned Silky Creamy Custard Pie is a classic dessert featuring a smooth, velvety custard filling baked in a flaky pie crust. Made with simple ingredients like eggs, sugar, cream, and vanilla, this nostalgic pie is perfect for any occasion and offers a comforting, rich texture with a hint of nutmeg on top.

Ingredients

Pie Crust

  • 1 9-inch unbaked pie crust

Custard Filling

  • 4 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the custard pie.
  2. Separate Egg: In a small bowl, separate one egg white from one egg yolk, reserving both for different steps in the recipe.
  3. Pre-bake Pie Crust: Brush the unbaked pie crust with the beaten egg white and bake it for 7-8 minutes. Then, allow it to cool for 10 minutes to avoid sogginess.
  4. Prepare Custard Mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together the remaining 3 eggs, the reserved egg yolk, any leftover beaten egg white, sugar, salt, vanilla extract, heavy cream, and milk until smooth and well combined.
  5. Fill and Bake: Pour the custard mixture into the pre-baked pie crust, sprinkle nutmeg evenly over the top, and bake for 35-45 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean, indicating the custard is set.
  6. Cool and Store: Let the pie cool on a wire rack, then store it in the refrigerator to chill before serving.

Notes

  • Be sure to pre-bake the crust to prevent it from becoming soggy during baking.
  • The pie is done when a knife or toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the pie to cool completely and refrigerate before serving for best texture and flavor.
  • Nutmeg can be adjusted or omitted according to taste preferences.
