This classic favorite Rice Krispie Treats recipe combines melty butter and gooey marshmallows with crispy rice cereal to create a sweet, chewy, and crunchy treat that's perfect for any occasion. Easy to make with simple ingredients, these treats set in just one hour and cut into perfect squares for sharing.

Ingredients

Wet Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup (170g; 12 Tbsp) unsalted butter
  • two 10-ounce bags (566g; 11 heaping cups) mini marshmallows
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • pinch salt

Dry Ingredients

  • 9 cups (270g) crispy rice cereal

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pan: Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper and lightly grease it with a nonstick spray to ensure the treats don't stick. Set aside.
  2. Melt Butter and Marshmallows: In a very large pot over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Once melted, add the mini marshmallows and stir continuously until the marshmallows are fully melted and the mixture is smooth.
  3. Add Flavor and Cereal: Remove the pot from heat, then immediately stir in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Fold in the crispy rice cereal thoroughly to ensure every piece is coated with the marshmallow mixture.
  4. Transfer to Pan: Pour the mixture into the prepared pan. Using a lightly greased silicone spatula, gently spread it evenly. Lightly grease the back of a flat spatula and gently press the mixture into the pan without packing it down tightly.
  5. Set the Treats: Allow the rice krispie treats to set at room temperature for at least 1 hour or up to 1 day. If leaving out for extended time, cover tightly.
  6. Cut and Serve: Lift the entire block of treats out of the pan using the parchment paper edges. Cut into squares to serve.
  7. Store Leftovers: Store any leftover treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, separating layers with parchment or wax paper to prevent sticking.

Notes

  • Lightly greasing your spatulas helps prevent sticking when spreading and pressing the mixture.
  • Do not pack the mixture down too firmly; gentle pressing keeps the treats light and chewy.
  • For best texture, consume within 3 days.
  • Use parchment paper to easily remove treats from the pan.
  • If you prefer bigger marshmallows, reduce to about 8 ounces for easier melting.
