Indulge in a delightful twist on French toast with this Creme Brulee French Toast recipe. This luscious dish features rich and creamy custard-soaked Texas Toast covered in a buttery brown sugar glaze, baked to golden perfection. Perfect for a cozy breakfast or brunch, it offers the comforting flavors of classic creme brulee in a warm, satisfying toast form.

Ingredients

Glaze

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 tbsp corn syrup

Bread Base

  • 1 loaf Texas Toast

Custard Mixture

  • 5 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cup Half and Half
  • dash salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Glaze: In a small pot over medium heat, melt the butter, brown sugar, and corn syrup together, stirring until the mixture is completely smooth and combined.
  2. Arrange the Bread: Pour the glaze into a large jelly roll pan and evenly spread it around the bottom. Lay 12 pieces of Texas Toast over the glaze, covering the entire pan.
  3. Make the Custard: In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs, half and half, a dash of salt, and vanilla extract until fully blended. Spoon this custard mixture evenly over the bread slices to soak them thoroughly.
  4. Chill to Set: Cover the pan with foil or plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight or for at least 3 to 4 hours to allow the bread to absorb the custard.
  5. Bake the French Toast: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the cover and bake the soaked bread uncovered for 30 minutes until the custard is set and the top is golden brown.
  6. Serve: Carefully turn each piece over to coat it with the caramelized glaze from the pan. Serve warm and enjoy the rich, custardy sweetness!

Notes

  • For best results, use thick-cut Texas Toast to hold the custard well without becoming soggy.
  • Overnight soaking enhances flavor and texture but a minimum of 3-4 hours works if short on time.
  • Serve with fresh berries or a drizzle of maple syrup for added sweetness and freshness.
  • Make sure to turn the toast before serving to enjoy the caramelized bottom glaze on top.
  • This recipe can be doubled or halved depending on your guest count.
