This Cherry Chocolate Dutch Oven Cobbler is a sweet and indulgent dessert perfect for camping or backyard grilling. Combining a rich chocolate cake mix with cherry pie filling and cola, this cobbler is cooked in a Dutch oven or cast-iron skillet over a grill, campfire, or even in a home oven. The result is a warm, gooey, and fruity cobbler topped with a moist chocolate cake layer, ideal for serving with whipped cream or ice cream.

Ingredients

Fruit Layer

  • 1 20-ounce can cherry pie filling

Cake Layer

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (approximately 15.25 oz)
  • 1 12-ounce can cola (regular or diet)
  • 8 Tablespoons salted butter, cubed

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill: Set your grill or smoker to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. If you don't have a grill, you can use hot campfire coals or your kitchen oven for cooking.
  2. Add the fruit: Pour the entire can of cherry pie filling into the bottom of a well-seasoned cast-iron skillet or Dutch oven, spreading it evenly.
  3. Make the cake layer: In a medium mixing bowl, stir together the chocolate cake mix and cola just until combined. Fold in the cubed salted butter pieces. Pour this mixture gently over the cherry pie filling in the skillet, making sure to cover the cherries completely.
  4. Cook the cobbler: Place the skillet on the grill or set the Dutch oven lid and place in hot coals. Bake the cobbler for 30 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Avoid lifting the lid too many times to maintain consistent heat.
  5. Serve and enjoy: Remove the cobbler from the heat source and allow it to cool slightly. Serve warm, optionally topped with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for an extra treat.

Notes

  • You can substitute the cola with root beer or any other soda for a different flavor profile.
  • Ensure your cast-iron skillet or Dutch oven is well-seasoned to prevent sticking and enhance flavor.
  • If cooking over a campfire, use hot embers and avoid direct flames to prevent burning the cobbler.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat gently before serving.
