These Cheesy Pizza Pinwheels are a delicious and easy appetizer featuring puff pastry rolled with tomato puree, garlic, basil, and a blend of Parmesan and mozzarella cheeses. Perfectly golden and crispy on the outside with a flavorful, cheesy filling, they make a great snack or party treat in just under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Pastry and Sauce

  • 1 puff pastry sheet, thawed and kept cold
  • ¼ cup tomato puree

Seasonings and Herbs

  • 1 large clove garlic, minced
  • 5 basil leaves, torn
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano

Cheeses

  • 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven temperature to 400°F (200°C) to prepare it for baking the pinwheels.
  2. Prepare the puff pastry: Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet onto a lightly floured surface. Using a rolling pin, roll it out gently to slightly enlarge the sheet.
  3. Spread tomato puree: Evenly spread the tomato puree over the puff pastry, leaving a ½ inch border on one long edge to help seal the roll later.
  4. Add seasonings: Sprinkle the minced garlic, torn basil leaves, salt, black pepper, and dried oregano evenly across the tomato puree.
  5. Add cheeses: Distribute the grated Parmesan and shredded mozzarella evenly over the seasoned tomato layer.
  6. Roll the pastry: Starting from the long end without the border, carefully and tightly roll the pastry sheet into a log. Press gently along the seam to seal the roll securely.
  7. Slice the roll: Using a sharp knife, cut the rolled pastry into 1-inch thick slices, forming pinwheels. Place them cut side up on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or greased to prevent sticking.
  8. Bake: Bake the pinwheels in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until they puff up and turn golden brown.
  9. Cool and serve: Allow the pinwheels to cool slightly before serving to enjoy their flaky, cheesy goodness.

Notes

  • Ensure the puff pastry is well chilled before rolling for best results.
  • Feel free to add other toppings like pepperoni or olives for variety.
  • Serve warm for the best flavor and cheese texture.
  • Pinwheels can be made ahead and reheated in the oven before serving.
