April Fools Apple Fries are a fun and delicious treat made by frying tart apple slices coated in a light flour batter, then dusted with cinnamon sugar. Served with a creamy caramel dip made from cream cheese, Cool Whip, and caramel sauce, these crispy apple fries offer a perfect blend of sweet and tart flavors in a unique dessert-style snack.

Ingredients

Apple Fries

  • 4 to 5 tart apples (Granny Smith or Pink Lady)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup Wondra flour
  • Vegetable oil (for frying, enough for about 2-3 inches deep)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/8 cup cinnamon

Dipping Sauce

  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 8 ounces Cool Whip (or 1 cup whipping cream with 1/2 cup sugar, whipped until stiff)
  • 1 cup caramel sauce (store bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. Heat Oil and Prepare Apples: In a fry pan or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil for frying to about 350°F (175°C). Meanwhile, mix buttermilk and 1 cup sugar in a medium bowl. Peel and slice apples, adding them immediately to the buttermilk mixture to prevent browning.
  2. Coat Apples with Flour: Spread Wondra flour evenly in a shallow dish. Remove apple slices one at a time from the buttermilk mixture and lightly coat all sides of each slice with the flour.
  3. Fry Apple Slices: Once the oil is hot, gently place the coated apple slices into the oil in a single layer without crowding. Fry until the bottom side turns golden brown, then flip to brown the other side.
  4. Drain and Sprinkle: Quickly remove the fried apple slices and place them on a paper towel-lined tray to absorb excess grease and cool slightly. While still hot, sprinkle immediately with the cinnamon and sugar mixture.
  5. Prepare the Dip: In a bowl, beat the cream cheese and Cool Whip together until completely blended and smooth. Stir in the caramel sauce until well combined. Transfer to a serving bowl, and drizzle a little extra caramel sauce over the top for garnish.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith or Pink Lady for the best balance of flavor and texture.
  • Wondra flour is ideal for a light, crispy coating because it’s finely milled and dissolves quickly.
  • Maintain oil temperature around 350°F to ensure apple slices cook evenly and crisp up without absorbing too much oil.
  • If you don’t have Cool Whip, whipping cream with sugar is a good alternative for the dip.
  • Serve apple fries warm with the creamy caramel dip for the best taste experience.
