Crispy and cheesy air fryer cheese straws made with flaky puff pastry, cheddar, Parmesan, and a hint of garlic and paprika. Perfect as a savory snack or appetizer ready in just 25 minutes.

Ingredients

Pastry

  • 1 puff pastry sheet, thawed and cold

Cheese

  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Seasoning

  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • ½ teaspoon ground sweet paprika
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pastry: Unroll the thawed puff pastry sheet onto a clean surface and gently roll it out to slightly enlarge the rectangle shape without tearing the dough.
  2. Cut the Pastry: Slice the pastry sheet lengthwise down the middle to create two long rectangular halves.
  3. Add Cheese: Evenly spread the shredded cheddar and grated Parmesan over one half of the pastry.
  4. Season: Sprinkle the minced garlic, ground sweet paprika, salt, and black pepper over the cheese layer, then carefully place the other pastry half on top. Trim the edges to make them even and straight.
  5. Press and Cut Strips: Gently press down the folded pastry to seal slightly, then cut into strips about 1 inch wide using a sharp knife or pizza cutter.
  6. Twist the Strips: Take each strip and gently twist it several times to create a spiral shape.
  7. Arrange in Air Fryer: Place the twisted cheese straws in a single layer inside the air fryer basket or rack. Cook in batches if needed to avoid overcrowding.
  8. Preheat Air Fryer: Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for optimal crispiness.
  9. Air Fry: Cook the cheese straws for 10 to 12 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
  10. Cool and Serve: Remove the cheese straws from the air fryer and transfer to a wire rack to cool slightly before serving warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Make sure the puff pastry is cold when working with it to prevent sticking.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket to ensure even cooking and crispiness.
  • You can substitute cheddar and Parmesan with other hard cheeses if desired.
  • Serve cheese straws immediately for best texture but they can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
