This Air Fryer Bang Bang Chicken is a crispy, flavorful dish featuring tender chicken breast pieces coated in almond flour and crushed chips, air fried to perfection and drizzled with a spicy, tangy bang bang sauce. Perfect as a snack or appetizer, this recipe is quick to make and brings bold flavors with minimal fuss.

Ingredients

Chicken and Coating

  • 1 lb chicken breast (cut into 1 inch pieces)
  • 1 cup blanched almond flour
  • 1/2 cup crushed plantain chips or tortilla chips
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp lime juice

Bang Bang Sauce

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp chili garlic sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp honey

Instructions

  1. Prep the coating: In a shallow bowl, combine the almond flour, sea salt, and crushed plantain or tortilla chips. Mix well to create the crispy coating mix.
  2. Mix egg wash: In a separate bowl, whisk together the large egg and lime juice until well combined. This will help the coating stick to the chicken.
  3. Coat the chicken: Dip each chicken piece first into the egg mixture, then roll it in the almond flour and chip mixture ensuring each piece is well coated. Set aside.
  4. Air fry the chicken: Arrange the coated chicken pieces in a single layer in the air fryer basket (cook in batches if needed to avoid overcrowding). Set the air fryer to 380°F and cook for 8-10 minutes.
  5. Flip and continue cooking: Flip each chicken piece over and continue air frying for another 6-8 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and the coating is crispy and golden brown.
  6. Prepare the sauce: While the chicken cooks, whisk together mayonnaise, chili garlic sauce, rice vinegar, and honey in a small bowl until smooth and well combined.
  7. Serve: Once the chicken is done, transfer to a serving plate and drizzle with the bang bang sauce or serve the sauce on the side for dipping.
  8. Oven alternative: Preheat the oven to 450°F. Lightly grease a large sheet pan and spread the coated chicken pieces in a single layer. Bake for 12 minutes, flip the chicken pieces, then bake for another 10-12 minutes until cooked through and crispy.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, crush the chips finely but not into powder.
  • You can substitute mayonnaise with a vegan mayo for a dairy-free option.
  • The chili garlic sauce can be adjusted to taste depending on your spice preference.
  • Air fryer times may vary depending on the model; check for doneness before finishing the cook time.
  • If using the oven, ensure to flip chicken pieces halfway to get even crispiness.
