Ingredients

Noodles and Sauce

  • 1 pound dry lo mein or spaghetti
  • 1/2 cup tamari or soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup water

Protein and Seasoning

  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 6 cloves garlic, sliced or chopped
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter

Vegetables and Garnish

  • 3 cups mixed stir-fry veggies (carrots, zucchini, bell peppers, broccoli)
  • 1/4 cup fresh baby basil leaves
  • Chopped green onions (quantity to preference)
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Cook the Noodles: Prepare the lo mein or spaghetti according to the package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Mix the Sauce: In a bowl, combine tamari or soy sauce, hoisin sauce, toasted sesame oil, and 1/4 cup of water. Stir well to blend all the flavors and set aside.
  3. Cook Chicken and Garlic: Heat the salted butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground chicken, sliced or chopped garlic, and chili flakes. Cook until the chicken is browned and cooked through. Season with black pepper to taste.
  4. Add Vegetables: Stir in the mixed stir-fry vegetables and cook for an additional 2 to 3 minutes, allowing them to soften slightly but remain crisp.
  5. Add Sauce and Noodles: Pour the prepared sauce mixture into the skillet with the chicken and vegetables. Bring to a low simmer. Add the cooked noodles and toss well to coat everything evenly in the sauce.
  6. Serve: Plate the lo mein and garnish generously with toasted sesame seeds, fresh baby basil leaves, and chopped green onions. Serve warm for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Lo mein or spaghetti can be used depending on availability, but lo mein gives a more authentic texture.
  • Adjust chili flakes according to your heat preference.
  • Use fresh vegetables for a crisp texture; frozen can be used in a pinch but may water down the sauce.
  • Toast your sesame seeds for enhanced flavor if they aren't pre-toasted.
  • For a gluten-free option, ensure you use gluten-free tamari and noodles.
